This is a subtitle for your new post

My customers often ask if their new system can be shut down during extended periods when they will be away. The following may help you to formulate your answer.

Radon mitigation systems are designed to operate continuously, effectively managing radon levels in both residential and commercial settings. It's essential to recognize that when a mitigation system is turned off and subsequently restarted, it effectively resets the system's operational parameters. The time needed to reduce radon levels after a restart will be similar to the time it took for the initial start. Typically, it takes around 24 hours for the system to stabilize for consistent and reliable performance. In some cases, it may take even longer.

During the startup period, occupants of the home may be exposed to higher levels of radon.

Individuals considering turning off their systems during extended absences need to understand the health risks associated with radon exposure. Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause significant damage to lung tissue over time. When a radon atom decays, it emits three types of radiation: alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays. Alpha particles, while being the least energetic, are the largest in size. They can penetrate cell membranes in the lungs and may occasionally reach the nucleus, potentially leading to chromosomal damage. Such damage can result in mutations, which can lead to uncontrolled cell division and significantly increase the risk of lung cancer.

In summary, the higher the radon level and the longer the exposure, the greater the risk of health issues. Shutting down your system and restarting it increases the radon level in your home during startup, as well as your radon exposure. Your decision to shut your system down or not during extended periods of absence is up to you. However, it's essential to note that the only benefit to the system owner of shutting it down is a small saving in electricity, which may not outweigh the potential health risks.

I have never intentionally shut down my system. It has been running for 12 years.
